Today’s post is a by my friend Shuna Morelli. Shuna is a massage therapist in Steilacoom WA and teaches kinesiology at several massage schools in the Puget Sound area. She teaches continuing education in PNF, trigger point therapy and coaches massage therapists interested in teaching CEs.
Sometimes I think we massage therapists have only a tiny glimpse of the enormity of the service we offer our world.
We improve the quality of life. We relieve pain and fear. We change lives.
Case in Point
A couple weeks ago I visited a friend in Ashland, Oregon. Actually, I was teaching a CE class at his massage school. I mentioned to him during a lunch break that I was getting a bit frightened about some symptoms I was feeling in my legs and feet. For months I had felt tingling and numbing in both legs and it was getting worse. Gulp. I wondered if I could possibly have Multiple Sclerosis, for which these are common symptoms.
David listened to me, and said, “Hop on the table, I have an idea.” He located a place on my posterior femur where the short head of the biceps femoris attaches, and where the sciatic nerve dives beneath the tissue. This, he taught me, is one of a few places where this nerve can become entrapped. I nearly flew off the table when he made slow contact. Zowie! That was a 15 on a scale of 10! A few moments later, I knew that he had located the problem.
The Rest of the Story
You know the rest of the story, because you have many of the same happy endings in your own office, every day. This is the nature of our work.
The numbing and tingling stopped. I am free of fear and pain. And his treatment took all of 15 minutes.
Imagine, if you want to, what may have transpired had I visited my local physician or neurologist.
You Have the Power, because You have the Training
Of all the health professions that exist, it is only the massage therapist who really KNOWS soft tissue. You are a soft tissue expert. 80% of human physical pain is caused by soft tissue! Put two and two together and you begin to get a much larger view of the VALUE of your work!
What are your stories? How have you changed the direction of a person’s life as David did mine? How has your fine work helped keep people out of the offices of MDs and neurologists because, turns out, it was only a tight pec minor or scalene or piriformis causing that tingling and numbing?
A friend told me the other day of a woman she knows who just had a scaleneectomy. Yup. Surgeons removed her anterior scalene to relieve massive thoracic outlet symptoms. It was the “last resort.”
The Storal of the Morey
What you do, matters. Your work is unique in the world. Your touch, combined with your training, literally changes the life of the not only the person on your table, but also of the friends and family members that care about their well being.
A Clarion Call
Will you tell us your story?
Let’s amass an archive of all our stories!
Our individual stories are medicine we give to ourselves and each other. They will allow us as a group to see into the lives of other massage therapists in every country. By doing this, we can begin to see the larger picture of our place in the world, to the vision and to the heart of what we do!
